The Art Haus & Co Guide to Notebook Sizes

Have you ever found the perfect notebook online, only to receive it and realize it's either way too big for your bag or too small for your handwriting?

If terms like A5, B6, and "Pocket" leave you feeling a little overwhelmed, you aren't alone! Navigating paper dimensions can feel like learning a secret code. At Art Haus & Co, we believe the right canvas is just as important as the pen you use on it.

To help you find your perfect fit, we’ve put together this quick and easy guide to the most common notebook sizes you'll find in our shop (and the stationery world at large!).

The A-Series: The Global Standard

The A-series is the international standard for paper sizes. The magic of this system is that each time you go up a number (from A4 to A5), the paper size is cut exactly in half.

  • A4 (The Desk Companion): Roughly the size of a standard piece of printer paper. This is perfect for large sketchbooks, sprawling mind maps, and keeping flat on a dedicated desk.

  • A5 (The Goldilocks Size): This is the holy grail of notebook sizes and the standard for most bullet journals. It’s large enough to fit a full day's worth of notes but compact enough to slide easily into a tote bag or backpack.

  • A6 (The On-the-Go Companion): Exactly half the size of an A5. It’s small, highly portable, and perfect for quick daily logs, grocery lists, or carrying into coffee shops when you want to pack light.

The B-Series: The Japanese Stationery Favorite

If you love Japanese stationery brands, you will see the B-series pop up frequently! These sizes fall right in between the A-series sizes, offering a fantastic middle ground.

  • B5 (The Student's Best Friend): Sitting comfortably between A4 and A5, B5 is incredibly popular for studying and extensive note-taking. It gives you more breathing room than an A5 without the bulk of a giant A4 notebook.

  • B6 (The Compact Planner): Slightly larger than A6 but smaller than A5, B6 is a favorite for daily planners. It gives you enough room to write out your schedule but remains incredibly lightweight.

Other Standard Sizes to Know

  • Pocket / Field Size: Usually around 3.5" x 5.5". As the name implies, these are designed to slip into a back pocket or coat pocket. They are rugged, utilitarian, and meant for capturing fleeting thoughts.

  • Standard / Traveler's: A tall, narrow size (roughly 4.3" x 8.2") made famous by Traveler's Company notebooks. It’s perfect for making lists, holding plane tickets, and writing in a linear fashion.

Quick Reference Size Chart

For the visual learners and quick scanners, here is a handy cheat sheet of standard dimensions:
